Theory and Background Materials

This page exists to provide a brief summary and outline of some of the major posts we’ve had on neoHOUSTON. Posts on this page are “conversation primers,” things that we refer back to often as theories, ideas, or case-studies. We recommend all our regular readers take the time to read each of these posts (if you haven’t already), since they form a lot of the fundamental basis for a lot of other posts.

Urbanism 101

The Transect: An introduction to the concept of the urban to rural transect, a model of the natural form of human settlement.
Context-Sensitive Streets: An introduction to the idea of context-sensitive streets, or streets designed to support needs of surrounding development.
SmartCode: An introduction to SmartCode, a market-driven, form-based building code.
The Urban Network: An introduction to the concept of the Urban Network, and a look at what it could mean for Houston.

Property Value Theory

This is my “big idea,” which I think really helps tie together our economic and formal thinking. I hope you’ll take the time to read through this material!

Intro to Property Value Theory: This is the working document that explains the details of the theory. It’s an improved summary of the ideas that I originally laid out in the three posts below.

Part 1, People-Productivity: Explaining the origins of urban property values.
Part 2, Interfaces and Conduits: Explaining what creates local property value in an urban context.
Part 3, Places that Attract People: Examining how to use the idea of people-productivity to add value to urban property.

Comparing Interfaces: This post explains contrasts how one well designed project and one poorly designed project have impacted property values over time.

Transportation Theory

Three Tiers: Andrew’s theory explaining the three types of travel and the primary needs of each type of traveler.
Multiways in Houston: One of our most popular posts of all time, introduces the concept of a multiway boulevard and looks at places these could be used.
