• Air-Conditioning Is Overdone, Says Spaniard in New York.

  This is just one example of the uniquely American phenomenon that could perhaps be best described as “heat denial.” When the summer is really freaking hot (especially in TX, though this article is about New York), people should dress for the weather. Then it wouldn’t be so miserable to go outside - because you wouldn’t need to be wearing excessively heavy clothes.

  As it is right now people have to choose whether they’ll be moderately comfortable outdoors (wearing very light clothing) and quite cold indoors, or miserable outdoors while comfortable indoors (wearing heavy clothing).

  Anyone who has to pay an electric bill can tell you how much money you can save just ticking the thermostat up a few degrees. Just going from 72 to 74 makes a big difference, 74 to 78 makes an even bigger difference. The reality is we could all be pretty comfortable at 78 degrees if we weren’t dressed for winter - and with all the money we saved from making the switch we could start buying a new climate-appropriate wardrobe!
