
In case you haven’t heard anything about it, they’re having a really rough time in Atlanta right now. Of course flooding is something Houstonians can relate to, especially on a day of heavy rainfall here.
The photo above is from my Aunt’s neighborhood, where the road into their subdivision has collapsed. She says they’ve got sink-holes and burst drains like this all over the city. Nobody in their neighborhood has been able to get to work in the last few days.
These situations are great examples of why we need redundancy in our transportation system. We need well-connected street networks so that there are always many alternate routes available, we need walkable communities where the day-to-day necessities are reachable on foot, and we need transit systems that can provide an alternative when the road system is compromised or stressed.
