The guys over at “Fort Worthology” have been writing a series of posts on their recent visit to Portland, Oregon.
Portland is a pretty cool city, one I enjoyed visiting a few years ago. Fort Worthology has done a great job explaining what their experience in Portland was like, and providing tons of photos to show you what things look and feel like on the ground.
My favorite was part one of the series, which looks in depth at the transit options Portland has developed over the years.
Lots of locals enjoy bashing on Portland, and point to it as the opposite of what they want Houston to be. I don’t agree with a lot of the heavy-handed regulation that takes place in Portland, but I can appreciate a really beautiful city when I see one.
For anyone who hasn’t had the opportunity to go there, take a look at the series on Fort Worthology, it’ll give nice peek into what Portland is like.

I lived in Portland for about a year and a half in the mid-90s. When you read some Houston bloggers when they write about Portland, it sounds like Portland is a total hellhole. The thing is, the opposite is true. The weather sure does suck (rain 3/4 of the year) but aside from that, I loved living in Portland. It was fun, easy to get around (by car or by transit–I used both equally), compact, and spectacular nature was nearby. It had great street life and great neighborhoods.
So Houston bloggers, if you are going to put down Portland, you really have to make an argument that despite the fact that it is a very pleasant place to live, it sucks! I think that’s a hard argument to make, frankly!
