Houston the 10th Most Inventive City

So says Business Week. While we fall behind most of the West Coast, and one surprise (Boise, Idaho?), we’re ahead of New York, Chicago, Dallas, and Austin. Nice!

  1. I was surprised to see that San Diego scored so high.

  2. Engineers do not make a big fuss about themselves as a rule. SD is here because venture capital keeps its protegees close by, and a lot of biotech VC work concentrated in that part of Southern California. Houston is the engineering, not energy, global capital, but that means that a high proportion of its professionals are working on designing projects, not patents, most of the time, and so getting know-how figured out on the ground takes precedence over the kind of intellectual property generation that makes individual headlines. No prob.
