So says Business Week. While we fall behind most of the West Coast, and one surprise (Boise, Idaho?), we’re ahead of New York, Chicago, Dallas, and Austin. Nice!

I was surprised to see that San Diego scored so high.

Engineers do not make a big fuss about themselves as a rule. SD is here because venture capital keeps its protegees close by, and a lot of biotech VC work concentrated in that part of Southern California. Houston is the engineering, not energy, global capital, but that means that a high proportion of its professionals are working on designing projects, not patents, most of the time, and so getting know-how figured out on the ground takes precedence over the kind of intellectual property generation that makes individual headlines. No prob.
