Bye bye Bennigans?

From Houstonist…
Apparently there will be no more Bennigans or Steak and Ale. As we know Starbucks has already announced over 600 locations to be closed… I wonder how many more of these suburban pad lords are going to go out of business before the economy fully recovers?

Pickens and Perot

Two websites worth visiting:
T. Boone Pickens offers his take on energy policy at http://www.pickensplan.com
Ross Perot brings back the budget charts at http://www.perotcharts.com
These two guys are doing the rest of us a great service to put such loud voices behind two of the biggest issues facing our generation: the need for energy diversity and the national [...]

Commuters instead of circulators? Bad idea.

Houston Strategies today suggests abandoning three of the planned light-rail lines in order to free up funds for other projects. In place of those lines, he suggests improved bus service, and investment in the commuter rail and improvements to the commuter bus system.
His suggestion is that we cannot afford the investment in the north and [...]

Should oil be cheap?

Update: An alternative take on this issue, in light on the financial crisis now looming over our nation, appeared on CNN a few days ago.

Basically, the article argues that there is a case to be made against [...]

The gist of the article is: Houston is way more affordable for the middle-class, and thus, functioning [...]

Texas Foreclosures in Context (Why John Edwards is a Moron)

Alright, where to begin with this one…
John Edwards was in town today, going on about how things are so bad in Houston. I guess he hasn’t read any newspapers recently, but what with the terrible busyness that comes with not being his party’s candidate, we can cut him some slack for that.
From Newsradio 740:
[Edwards] says [...]

Kirby Can Be Saved

Kirby Can Be Saved

Recently, Trees for Houston has been battling with the Upper Kirby TIRZ over widening Kirby drive.
The argument tends to go something like this:
TIRZ: “The lanes are too narrow, there’s all this development happening over here, and we’ve got to improve traffic flow.”
TFH: “The trees are about the only thing making Kirby bearable for pedestrians, all [...]

Welcome to the blog!

I figure every blog needs a first post. Nothing monumental, but here it is.
This blog is going to cover my take on urban issues in Houston, particularly related to transportation and land use. I’ll occasionally dabble in other things.
My ability to keep this fresh will depend in some measure on how busy work is, I’m [...]
